If You Wanna Be A Star....

Business Tips for Photographers from The Shoppe Marketeer

Just like all of you photographers out there who have "made the leap" so to speak, in turning your art into your career, we at The Shoppe are a small business. We are creative professionals and we face all the same challenges that professional photographers do. Sometimes, I can't help but wonder if me sitting down to give advice is the blind leading the blind! In just the past week, we have been reminded again how "stiff" the competition has gotten in our marketplace and what happened that brought that reminder to us comes just on the heels of a lot of discussion recently about our direction moving forward, about our business model,  & about struggles we face because of "competitors" whose sole strategy is a pricing war where quantity is placed above quality. As we have discussed and met and analyzed in our planning meetings, I have found myself mulling it over, usually as I have a cup of coffee as the sun rises, and occasionally as I have a glass of wine as it sets. So where has the mulling led? To something my father once said and what it means all these year later.bitmap2I was in my early 20s. I was between my two college experiences and I was struggling. Though smart and capable, I failed out of school in my first go round, was working for minimum wage and was refusing to move home to take further advantage of my parents who had spent all that money for me to not pass my classes. My father came to visit me, which was rare. We sat across the table at an Outback steak house over dinner and with tears in my eyes, I apologized. I shared my regrets and told him that I knew I had let him and my mother down. His response? "It's water under the bridge, Baby," but what he said next is what really stuck with me and came back to me over the past couple of weeks. He looked at me and said simply, "But know this ~ If you want to be a star, you gotta shine!" bitmap So what does that mean to me now as a marketeer? What does is it mean to The Shoppe, and more importantly, what does it mean to YOU?? I've been thinking a lot on how, as a business, especially a creative business, we can "SHINE". Over coffee yesterday morning, it came to me on the rays of a mighty fine sunrise. If it's one thing that can be said about stars, it's that, sort of like snow flakes, no two are alike. As creatives, we are ALL stars! The only thing that your "competitors" can't duplicate is YOU! I've said it before and I will say it again.... People don't do business with companies. They do business with PEOPLE! Everything about your business should be YOU. Your branding, your style, your marketing, your product offerings  should all reflect who you are, what your art is, what you believe, and what you have to offer. Don't worry about what others doing, because no matter what they do, no matter how they may try to duplicate your style and undercut your pricing or market directly to your client base, they can't be YOU!!

In the coming weeks and months, you will see us at The Shoppe practicing what preach. We hope that as time goes on you will continue to feel as though you "know" us better. We hope that you will know that something is our work just from seeing it, that you will know our "style", our purpose, and what we have to offer. We are not afraid to admit that it's been a challenging year, but we are looking forward to some change. We are excited about our possibilities and we are READY TO SHINE! We hope to see you shine too! =) Oh, and if you need a little extra inspiration and motivation... I went back to school a few years later, married, and the oldest student in most of my classes. It was a long commute & there were a lot of challenges and no one could do it for me. I was on the Dean's List. So SHINE ON!! seuss
